Four months away...

Life is busy. Planning a wedding while living life is crazy busy. It took us 3 months of planning to get our engagement pictures snapped. We have been engaged for over a year, but getting an afternoon coordinated with our manic work schedules and life obligations, not to mention scheduling with our photographer- was nearly impossible. This is proof it happened. There is a good story to go along with that particular day, to be shared later..
Despite the madness of our lives, the party must go on. We have made time for joy and found time to plan our celebration. Truly, the emotional journey of this past year has brought us closer and forced us to reflect on why September 17th is so important to us. This will be our day to share with our friends and family, hand in hand, declaring our union and beginning our new life together.  This is a day we will celebrate for the rest of our lives. Im sure it will seem overwhelming when the day comes, but I have no doubt each and every moment leading up to it will shine through that afternoon. We have made the major decisions, now just for the final details. Thank goodness for the talent and patience of Jen's sister Deanna. Without her, we would be getting married at the courthouse and eating burritos.  (which sometimes sounds really fabulous) We are putting together a beautiful, memorable day. Its starting to feel real and getting pretty exciting. We are probably most excited to simply bring our friends and family together and share the same space with our most beloved on a sunny fall afternoon! Bring your festive party spirit and help us celebrate!

The engagement...

Tengboche Monestary, Nepal
In December 2008, Bryan surprised me with an amazing gift- a trip to Mt Everest! What? We are going to Mt Everest for a month? Crazy-YES. Exactly what we needed,-YES. Well after several camping trips, hiking adventures in San Diego and gearing up for the cold, we set out on what would be a life changing trip. We spent an epic month traveling through the Himalayas, ending in Thailand and coming home with a new perspective on how life could be. Our trip was amazing! We met incredible people (you know who you are), and we further developed trust and respect for one another in the challenging environment of the trek.  Bryan is a very organized man. He had everything planned from day one of the trip. He carried my engagement ring around his neck for 19 days in  a pouch. I never suspected a thing. Then, at approx 15,000 ft, at Tengboche monastery, the monks were awaiting our arrival . There was a tea ceremony, chanting and the honor of my true loves hand as he knelt down before me. He read a beautiful poem, surrounded by our fellow trekkers, asked me to marry him. WOW, I was not sure if it was the lack of oxygen or the moment that took my breathe away, but I was dizzy.  We were smiling brightly for the rest of our trip (except for the Kathmandu illness part).
Me: Am I ready to get married again? Me: no. Me: Am I ready to share my life with an amazing guy who inspires me to live and play, and supports me in ways I never imagined possible in a partner? Me: YES. Im a lucky girl. My answer was YES.

The Beginning...

I like to imagine our life as a topo map, with many peaks, rolling hills, sloping valleys and the blue flowing rivers and oceans in between...
This is how we see the world together. Bryan and I met at work. We had each gone through the pain of divorce, and shared the experience of  very long days contemplating the meaning of life, and the source of happiness. We were friends first. Sharing deep thoughts, some nice runs and thoughts over coffee in between patients at work. When I was struggling to get through the day, he would bring me a burrito and a coffee--delivered with his contagious smile. When he was having a rough day,  I would take away his coffee (his 4th or 5th cup) and bring him water or juice and encourage him to get outside and play. This supportive friendship went on for months...a few non-dates, post-run dinners where I would insist "this is not a date" and  alot of texting. Then one day, we accepted our fate. Hiking Mt. San Jacinto , enjoying the vast beauty of the California desert, sharing our love for all things outdoors, it became a date.  From that point forward, most of our "dates" were beach bonfires on Fiesta island with our four dogs, burritos and beer. A few runs around Mission Bay followed by burgers and beers. And the occasional North park eatery nights after a long run through Balboa Park. You can see the trend...we enjoy a good workout followed by a great meal and quality beer. Good living. Then came the trailer. "Wildwood". We bought it on Craigslist. ( where we buy most things). It is a 19ft aluminum trailer. We LOVE it. I had never camped with a trailer before... I was skeptical..but it is fabulous. Especially when we are high up in the mountains, where the chill hits just after the sun dips. Nothing like a fridge full of goodness and a hot shower. We have had many wildwood adventures, sometimes in the driveway on a Wednesday, just to give ourselves that far-away feeling. Its now been 2 years. We are still having those deep talks, still contemplating life, but we have found the source of happiness-sharing life with a partner whom you respect and love. We are a great team. One of our mottos "you make it strong, Ill make it beautiful" and "in search of the mundane". We are doing our best to figure out how to experience the most in this life together.  Its a work in progress.
